Welles Crowther worked as an investment banker on the 104th floor of the south tower in the World Trade Centre. He survived the plane’s impact. Months later his mother, Alison Crowther, read a newspaper article in which eyewitnesses reported being rescued from a smoking staircase by a man who had a red cravat around his mouth and nose. Welles Crowther had sacrificed himself in order to save others.
Six months after the attacks, his body was found beneath a collapsed staircase. His trademark red cravat remains missing.
Welles Crowther was 24 years old.
